Frugal Living – Finding the Best Deals When Shopping

when shoppingFor anyone who is trying to pay off debt, the last thing you may be thinking of is going on a shopping spree. However, even the best of us need to buy new clothes every now and then. Whether it’s for work or just because your 10-year-old favorite t-shirt finally got a hole in it, you don’t have to deviate from your debt repayment plan to go shopping. In fact, there are great ways to score deals when shopping online. Here are the top three tips when shopping online.

Top Three Tips When Online Shopping

Find Discount Retailers

The reason outlet malls are so popular is because they offer designer brands for less. The Internet allows you to have access to virtual outlets at your fingertips. A lot of online retailers will offer discounts on their online merchandise and out-of-season wear. The trick is to know how to find those discounts!

A shop such as Superdry may be seen to do this, but if you actually look at their price tags they are a very reasonable priced shop compared to many other branded clothing retailers.  Superdry  not only has lower prices than places such as Hollister but they also are always offering great deals on many of their items such as 3 for 2 on their t-shirts. It is normal practice for the more expensive and well-known stores to offer discounts, this is to encourage many of us who think these shops prices are beyond our own affordability. For example The Watch Department discounts are usually very generous to consumers with as much as half off retail prices.

Shop During Sales

If you sign up for an online retailer’s email list, you’ll always be the first to know about their online sales. Sales can range from a discount on a popular item to free shipping to reduced prices on certain items when you buy a set amount.

Sign up for all your favorite brands in order to find out when they have sales and take advantage of discount codes.

Always Search for Coupons When Shopping Online

The last, but probably most important, shopping tip is to do a quick search for any online coupons before you hit the “buy” button. Whenever you’re ready to check out on an online shopping cart, there is usually a box for a discount code. By doing a quick search for an online coupon code,  typing in the “Store Name” and “Discount Code” into your search bar, will produce any online codes that you can use when checking out. This can usually save you a certain percentage or at least find free shipping.

By being smart when shopping online, you can usually find discounts for all your shopping needs without sacrificing the need to pay off your debt. Happy Shopping!

      You are welcome Tony!

  2. Johnny Moneyseed 03/13/2013 at 5:54 am # is a great plugin for your browser that will apply the best promo code available to your shopping cart. It works pretty much everywhere.

I don’t ever buy ‘new clothes’ as there are usually awesome brand name clothes at the thrift store. $20 on sale online, $4 at the thrift store!

Thanks for the tip on the plugin, I’m going to have to try that!

I do a lot of my shopping on line, mostly for durable goods. I ALWAYS do a search for coupon codes when checking out. More often than not I’ll find something that works. retail me not has been awesome for that. But i will check out Johnny Moneyseed’s suggestions as well. That sounds like a nice plugin to have!

The only time i’ve used promo codes is when buying software online. I’ve saved a lot of money on software!

I buy stuff online all the time and I can honestly say that I have never searched for coupon codes. I mean I will use them if they are provided via a referral source but that’s such a good idea. I definitely agree on watching for sales – I’ve made some of my best purchases online just from opening the coupon and sale emails I get from Staples. Yes I am obsessed with office supplies :)

    • Paul 03/13/2013 at 8:11 pm #

The best sales I have found have been from email specials. I hate getting spasm email so I only sign up for emails with businesses that I will buy from.

I buy some things online and I like the shopping bots that help you find the lowest prices. You can also find coupons easily online too. It is my favorite way of shopping second only to discount store shopping.

Amazon is one of my favorite sites to use. Great selection and prices are right!

There are lots of comparison websites around of course but you have to consider the convenience as well. And generally ignore those AdWords promoted sites which tend to be more expensive. There is an interesting UK site for those over here which is crowd-sourced and called Happier – And of course there is Groupon, Wowcher and also voucher sites not fogetting eBay. There are lots of ways to save money although of course the best way is not to buy something unless you actually need it!

I agree with your last point, shopping for the sake of shopping is the fastest way to financial ruin. However, as you stated John, shopping online allows you to compare prices and find deals not possible at the retail level.

I always make sure to go to Goodwill on 50% off Sale day. So I get some big deals!

Thanks for the reminder to look for online coupons before buying. I forget sometimes and then kick myself later when I see others mention it.

Amazon usually ends up being my go-to store for most general purchases online, but I always shop around just to make sure that they have the best pricing. What usually kills it for their competition is shipping. Rarely can you find free shipping available on orders totaling $25. Most places either don’t offer free shipping or make the threshold much higher.

    • Paul 03/19/2013 at 6:43 am #

The free shipping is tough to compete with and like you MB is a major factor in why I do business with Amazon.

The first thing I do when shopping is to list down what I plan to buy. This makes me save a lot of time looking around and buying unwanted or unimportant things. I also shop during sales most of the time.
