You may love using all of your mobile devices and other gadget technology you have, but you may also feel like they are pretty expensive to keep up with. This can be a real problem for people who are on a tight budget, or who may just find their monthly credit card bill increasing to scary amounts.
The good news is that there are ways you can continue to enjoy modern technology without breaking the bank. You can be frugal and technologically savvy at the time. Here are a few tips to help keep your finances in check while still being able to enjoy all of the cool things that technology has to offer.
Figure Out What You Really Need
The first thing you need to do is gather all of the gadgets you have lying around and figure out which things you can live with and which things you can live without.
Maybe you have three different digital cameras, but you only ever use one. Or you have several smartphones gathering dust. This is a great opportunity to separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak, and make two piles: one with the devices you actually use, and the other with devices that you don’t. This can be difficult to do for some people, especially if you have a problem letting go of things, but you can force yourself to do it.
Now, you will have an idea of what you can keep and what you can get rid of.
Sell the Unused Devices
Next, you can sell the pile of unused devices, either online or at local electronic stores and pawn shops. This will have a doubly beneficial effect: it will shrink your inventory of devices and it will put cash into your pocket.
With the cash, you can pay off those bills that may be getting out of hand. Or, if you think you are ready, you can purchase newer devices so you are current with the technology. Whatever you choose to do, make sure you control yourself and don’t find yourself back in the same position six months later, with gadgets laying around that you never use.
Find Free Apps
When it comes to mobile devices, you may need to keep up with technology more so than with, say, a video recorder. You can do this by saving money on the apps that you purchase.
There are plenty of apps, like this weather app, that do the same job as paid apps, but you don’t have to shell out any cash for them. You can find apps of all categories — productivity, gaming, organizational and even educational — that will do everything you need them to do. This will help you save money for the latest devices when they are released every year, letting you enjoy the technology without spending too much money.
There’s no reason why you can’t be frugal and enjoy technology at the same time.
