7 Unusual Ways to Make Extra Money

make extra moneyNeed Some More Dough, Joe?

Most of us could use a little extra cash, right? Sometimes there are just too many obstacles standing in the way of that elusive healthy bank balance. Christmas, birthdays, weddings, the kid’s outgrowing their school uniforms after just one semester; it all adds up! But all is not lost. Here’s seven slightly unusual (but totally legal!) ways to up your income.

1. Donate Eggs

Choosing this method of earning extra cash isn’t a decision to take lightly, but it could be one of the most amazing things you ever do. About 10% of the population has difficulty conceiving, and donating eggs could provide couples with much longed for children. It’s a bit of an involved process, but compensation for such an act ranges from 4,000 to 10,000 dollars per extraction. Men, you’re not left out here! Donating sperm could land you 100 dollars per specimen.

2. Lose Weight

While many people aim to drop a dress size or two as a New Year’s resolution, those in the know are getting paid for it! Websites intent on tackling the nation’s obesity crisis are paying dieters to reach and maintain a healthy BMI. You’ll need to be weighed at your local medical center to prove you’re not cheating, but that little bit of effort could earn you between 100 and 1,000 dollars depending on your goals. And you’ll be back in your skinny jeans in no time!

3. Shop!

Love to shop – till you drop? Then this is for you. Once reserved for online purchases only, cash-back websites are now offering small rewards to shoppers who check in to stores using their cellphones or use a registered credit card for purchases. You can generally expect to get between one and five percent of your purchase back. Another method is mystery shopping. You’ll need an eye for detail, but assignments could pay out around 15 dollars plus expenses.

4. Sell Your Story

Ever met a celebrity? Or had a kitchen disaster? Then don’t keep it to yourself, share your experiences and get paid. Now let’s be honest, you might not end up on the bestseller list, but your story could be gracing the pages of the next issue of your local gossip mag. Depending on who you sell to, and how juicy your story is, you could be receiving a check for anywhere between 15 and 3000 dollars. Grab a few mags and see which accept reader contributions.

5. Rent Your Driveway

If you live in the center of a major town or city, in close proximity to a transport hub or near to a popular tourist attraction, your driveway could be raking it in! List your drive on one of the dedicated websites and see if there’s any interest. If your rental price is less than nearby parking lots, you could be onto a winner. People will also pay for the added security of being parked on a residential street and you could be earning 80 to 500 dollars each month.

6. Advertise

Have you ever been sat in traffic and seen a car pull up next to you covered in advertising and thought what moron would do that to their car?’ Well, you could be that moron! Car tattoos adorned with big brand advertisements are beneficial in getting the word out there, and companies will pay around 300 dollars per month for this. You can get even more for advertising on your body, but do you really want a permanent reminder of potato chips on your arm? Probably not

7. Be Opinionated

If you’re keen to influence big name brands, sign up to a few online survey sites and tell companies what you think of their latest products. You’ll earn around 2 dollars for just 15 minutes of your time. You can also earn from review sites, writing up short and snappy thoughts on your newest kitchen appliance, or if you’ve got a lot to say, get your ramblings down in blog form and post them up online. Many people make steady incomes through affiliate links, and you can too!

All these can bring some extra cash, agreed. Egg donation, however, is really hard – I have had egg extraction (not to donate) and it takes ages to recover. I would rather consider this one a great benefaction (even if there is some payment involved).

I agree with you, i wouldn’t look at it as earning and wouldn’t do it for the sake of money. I’d love to think of it as a generous move to help other couples bare child.

It is unusual and you can most definitely make some decent money if you are willing to take what goes with this decision.

I like the renting your driveway idea. If you are gone during the day anyways, you might as well earn some extra dough. I know from experience that parking in a private area makes a real difference for commuters. Definitely worth putting up some dough.

Another idea similar to that is car sharing where you lease your car when you are not using it. This is only practical if you live in an urban setting and you have a second mode of transportation.

I have rented my driveway and participated in surveys that would get a store credit of about $60 for two hours of questioning. In business school I went to other towns to promote my school at college fairs, it wasn’t a paid gig but the mileage and food stipend was high so we had a free weekend somewhere (always picked attractive towns) and came back with a little cash.

I’m curious to know what your experience was with renting out your driveway. Sometimes things sound like a good idea in theory until you try them.
