5 Things You Need to Know for a Good Night Sleep

good night sleepWhat is keeping you up at night?

Why can’t you sleep well at night?

Even though these two questions are similar, they are very much different and the answer to these questions can be the difference between a long sleepless night and  a restful night of sleep.

Smell

We often think that a smell that soothes our senses and helps us relax is good for sleep. A scent like lavender, vanilla or jasmine are associated with relaxation and can help you get to sleep quicker and stay asleep longer.  The best way to determine if this is an option for you is to try one of these scents in an essential oil or better yet in a massage-oil before bedtime.

Mattress and pillow

These two items are important. So, you need to be sure that you buy one that is comfortable and provides the needed support. For this, you should get in touch with an expert who can guide you with the perfect mattress and pillow for your sleep.

With adequate knowledge about it, you should have no trouble buying your next mattress or pillow online at a discount. The internet offers a wide variety, and you should have no trouble finding a mattress and pillow to suit your needs. Coupon codes are available in abundance so take the time required, it can save you hundreds of dollars.

Sleep hours

If you know that you have to wake up early in the morning, you might make a conscious effort and lose sleep. Also, it is possible that you might wake up a couple of times at night.

On the other hand, even if you are trying to sleep for eight or nine solid hours of sleep, you might keep looking at your alarm clock or watch to be sure that you are sleeping for a certain number of hours.  If you are not able to consistently get 8 hours of sleep, try to take a 30-60 minute power nap when possible, this can help make up for the restless night last night.

Room temperature

If you love sleeping in a cool environment, you might feel the need to open the windows for a cool summer breeze. On the other hand, if you are a hot sleeper, you might be happy switching off the air conditioner and pulling up the blanket.

Some people want an ideal sleeping temperature that is neither too hot nor too cold. This is obviously a personal preference and you will need to find a solution that works for you and your partner.  Ceiling fans and blankets are a good solution!

Restless Thoughts

It is possible that you have some stress in your life, and this is keeping you up at night. However, you should know that with restless thoughts, you cannot manage a good night sleep. So, think of something positive or listen to soulful music to calm down your nerves before bedtime and have a good night sleep.

Snoring

Well, this is an issue that is usually faced by couples, siblings and roommates. If one partner keeps snoring, the other partner will be disturbed unless the other partner is even snoring.

For this, it is important to opt for anti-snoring solutions and be sure that your partner sleeps well without snoring. If you haven't tried adhesive nose strips you should give them a try. They are inexpensive and just may solve your snoring issue.  This should help you have a good night sleep too.

I’m with you on the restless thoughts Gary. I try to keep a routine where I try to relax and prepare myself for sleep. For those evenings when I’m having trouble falling asleep, I have an app that plays nature sounds. My favorite is a thunderstorm, does the trip everytime!

Hi Chella, I use them and while I can’t comment on your husband’s situation, I can tell you that I get a much more restful night of sleep since I am able to breath thru my nose. Without the nose strips, I would wake several times a night for a drink of water. Try them and let me know how they work.

Hi Paul, have you tried adhesive nose strips or know of someone who uses them? I am really looking for a solution to my husband’s snoring. I am actually happy to read this, snoring is a big problem.

These 5 things are helpful and I actually do and have these religiously. But, I may add that taking a bath before bed time helps me have a good night sleep.

Restless thoughts keep me awake more often than I’d like. If my mind doesn’t calm down within a reasonable amount of time, I sometimes find it helpful to get out of bed and write down what’s on my mind. Getting it out of the way lets me go back to bed with a clearer mind.

As for snoring, if one person is regularly snoring a lot, they should be evaluated by a doctor. Sleep apnea is fairly common, but carries some major risks if it’s not treated properly.
